Courses from New Perspectives ...New Perspectives ... offers a range of courses designed for headteachers, teachers, those training to teach and, often, other staff or governors in primary and nursery schools. All are based on research and experience, with both a practical and a theoretical element. Courses are set up, usually in schools, in response to requests, rather than organised on pre-set dates. If you wish to discuss holding one of these courses in this school and how these can be of most use to you, then please contact us. All are designed as one day training courses and can be tailored to the specific needs of an individual school, partnership or group. Most can also be adapted as a set of two or three twilight sessions. There is potential for combining elements of two courses, such as 'New Perspectives on ... child development and learning styles' and '... environments for learning'. The rationale, audience, timescale and commitment and intended outcomes of each of the established courses can be seen by clicking the appropriate link from the left-hand column. These are New Perspectives on...
The first three courses were designed to help teachers understand the importance of how children learn, of how environment and context is crucial in enabling this and to help schools respond positively and creatively to the Primary Strategy, outlined in the document 'Excellence and Enjoyment', and develop their curriculum to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, in the light of research knowledge about how young children learn. The courses on values, gifted and talented children and on young bilingual learners result directly from research and evaluation projects conducted by Tony Eaude. That on values stems from a considerable amount of work on Values Education, including an evaluation of this funded by the DfES Innovation Unit, and moral education more generally, for which see Values Education developing positive attitudes. The work on gifted and talented draws especially on his work with Primary Improvement Project through Action Research, described briefly in previous projects. That on young bilingual learners draws on his experience as head of multi-ethnic primary school and especially his recent work on the achievement of Bangladeshi heritage children, for which further details are available also by following the link Enhancing Achievement for Young Bilingual Learners. The course on spiritual development is based on Tony Eaude's extensive work on this, both in his doctorate and several academic articles, available by looking at the relevant sections of publications. This course is designed to help teachers to understand this elusive and puzzling area in new ways and to make provision which enables and encourages this. This provides both re-assurance that many teachers are doing much to contribute in this area, and challenge, suggesting a range of strategies which teachers may adopt. The courses on creating an environment to enhance spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and on assessment, teaching and planning draw on work in Tony Eaude's book details of which can be seen on www.learningmatters.co.uk/education/title.asp?myBid=372' The former explores what these four aspects of personal development entail, how they are linked and the importance of the classroom and school environment and relationships. The latter examines in more depth the practical implications for pedagogy in the classroom. The course on teaching for creativity draws on work to be published in 2009, exploring both what creativity means and the implications for teachers. That on Every Child Matters will help teachers and other staff consider the implications of this important legislation for their own community and children's teaching and learning needs. The course on community cohesion will help school leaders in particular understand the duty to promote community cohesion and how it is inspected, while that on emotional well-being deals with an issue increasingly recognised as central to children's learning. For more details on any of these courses, please click the links above. Tony Eaude also recently ran a successful one-day course on the use of ritual and symbol.
